Why do they drive the fire truck to the supermarket and all around town?

I have heard this one a few times, normally it is asked with contempt. What most do not know is that firefighters do not get a "lunch break". When they are at work, they are on duty every second of their shift.....

When you see a fire truck at a restaurant or the supermarket, the firefighters are ready to go to a fire if the alarm sounds. In addition, fire trucks have diesel engines and it is absolutely necessary that they are driven to keep the engine in tune.

  1. Thank you for posting this. Many also don't realize that the firemen may stop for lunch on the way home from a call or if a call is cancelled. I have heard many times about people seeing the firetruck using lights and sirens "to go to lunch". This is not the case. Many times they will have a call that gets cancelled and so they turn off their lights and sirens. They figure while they are out they may as well stop for what they need instead of going out again later in the day.
