Recent input by many speakers during the public comment section at the Wake County School Board meetings has been inappropriate, offensive, but mostly ineffective in my opinion. Most of what I have seen and heard from critics will not do anything to sway opinions of the school board majority nor will those comments positively influence the policies established by that elected board. What you are seeing on the news is a perfect example of how not to address elected officials!
In my February 2 post, I provided tips on how to provide effective comments during public hearings. The same strategy applies during public comment periods. Whether you are a student, a supporter, a critic or a member of a special interest group, elected officials need to be with respect and decorum. Because someone is an elected official does not give you any special privilege to be rude or disrespectful.
The best strategy, if you truly want to change policy, is to present your issue respectfully, provide convincing data and do not threaten the very elected officials you want to impress.
