I have read some of the comments regarding this facility and there is a lot of misunderstanding about this facility. Although I am no expert on this project, much of this information has been available online for a while.
This land is located between Business 55 and the bypass, near the truss plant and the Bridgewater subdivision. This land was originally part of the South Wake Landfill. This section was planned as the borrow area, which was to supply dirt to cover the landfill trash. I am not sure if the county will move some of this dirt before construction begins.
The entire complex is proposed to have the college sized baseball stadium, a smaller softball field, soccer fields and tennis courts. I am pleased to learn that they will be selling naming rights, which is something I proposed years ago for park facilities while on the town council. The stadium will be capable of hosting other baseball events in addition to the Coastal Plain League team. There had been talk about Wake Tech leasing the field for their baseball program. The CPL is a summer league comprised of college players. This is similar to minor league baseball as they use wood bats. A comparable league is the Cape Cod League.
This complex will offer a good alternative to baseball at Durham or Zebulon. The business community should embrace this facility as it is guaranteed to bring in folks from out of town, while keeping Holly Springs residents here in town for their entertainment. The local chamber of commerce really should issue a statement of support for this facility. We have friends in SC whose son played for two CPL teams there and they shared that the community really came together and game night provided some of these towns with a high level of excitement.
Again, a great opportunity for Holly Springs.
