Someone recently asked me if political parties endorse local candidates. The answer is yes, but that endorsement is not listed on the ballot. Although I was endorsed by the Wake GOP in my last re-election bid, I am not sure that political party involvement in local elections is completely positive.
That same person asked me when the next municipal election would take place in Holly Springs. It will take place in November 2011. This prompted me to think about how we can get the candidates to focus and address the issues so the best people get elected. Often people cast their votes based on a candidates party affiliation and they may not pay any attention to their position on issues, which is unfortunate. As registered voters we can list ourselves with a party affiliation: Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or even be listed as unaffiliated.
What would be interesting is for all the candidates in the 2011 Holly Springs council race (2 seats will be up for grabs) list themselves as "unaffiliated". This way people will vote for them based on the issues and not affiliation.
