At the November 16 town council meeting, there was an agenda item regarding the formation of a new Citizen of the Year Committee. It is comprised of the current and former citizens of the year. Since the Chamber of Commerce abandoned the award this year without any notice, these committed citizens came together to help keep the spirit and importance of the award alive.
At the town council meeting, the reigning "COY" spoke about why the award was so important to her. In addition, the town council was asked to provide financial support...basically by purchasing the plaque (about a $25 expense).
The town council (with the exception of Parrish Womble) all supported the motion to provide this funding and logistical support so that this award could continue. I could not figure out his reasoning, but I think he wanted the town council to make the selection, essentially turning this into a political award.
