Not all council business is conducted in open session, some things can and should be done in closed session, out of the public eyes and ears. Some the the reasons for a closed session include: any confidential information, consultation with an attorney, claims or litigation, economic development matters, real property acquisition, employment contracts, personnel matters and investigations.
During open session, the town attorney normally provides the general statute which explains why the closed session is necessary.
In the past we discussed issues relating to personnel matters, land acquisition, economic development matters such as various litigation matters and the Novartis incentives.
Once the closed session is concluded, the council will resume open/public session and adjourn or continue the meeting.
So next time you are wondering why the council is going behind closed doors, you will understand why!
